Preview: Portraits of the Homies

I was recently given the opportunity to spend a couple of days at Homeboy Industries, an organization which offers job training, tattoo removal, and mental health services free of charge to former gang members. For those not raised in a neighborhood dominated by gang violence, it is difficult to appreciate how seductive gang membership is and also how difficult it is to extricate one's self from a gang when it permeates virtually every aspect of daily life. In the following days I will be posting a series of portraits of the men and women, girls and boys hoping and working to leave gang life behind. I hope that these images do them justice.

Christmas in the Haight

After five years of digital photography, I recently decided to start shooting film again. Armed with a Leica camera which is far older than I am, I took a walk through San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury district on Christmas morning. Here are the results of my first roll of film.

My inaugural post

I should first take the time to say thank you to all of those who have supported me in my photography throughout the years. Your kind words of encouragement and messages about the emotions evoked by my pictures are the reason that I continue to take photos.

The title of this blog is "daily life through the lens" for the reason that these are images from ordinary life. Often the pictures are of people and places in my life, other times I get an opportunity to walk a mile in someone else's shoes and see through their eyes. But the fact remains that no matter who you are or where you live, we encounter beautiful places and people in the course of our lives. The beauty in these photos surrounds us all; I hope that this blog serves as a simple reminder of that fact.
